50 Years of the International Studio for Wood Sculpture
A golden jubilee of creativity in wood – 50 years of the International Studio for Wood Sculpture by CSLU–Prilep celebrated with a retrospective exhibition and international recognition.
Established in 1971, the International Studio for Wood Sculpture was born out of a visionary partnership between culture and industry. Initiated by Dr. Boško Babić and developed in collaboration with the timber company “Crn Bor,” this studio became a pioneering example of how contemporary art can harmoniously coexist with industrial development. Rather than merely promoting consumer products through traditional advertising, the idea was to create long-lasting cultural value through sculpture—art that leaves a legacy.
From its very first session, the studio invited both Macedonian and international sculptors to work in Prilep with wood as their primary material, merging functionality with aesthetics. Every summer, the city welcomed renowned artists who brought their skills and perspectives to create unique pieces that reflect innovation, individuality, and a strong connection to the environment. The artworks generated during these residencies remain not only as part of CSLU–Prilep collection but also as part of Prilep’s cultural landscape.
In 2021, the Center proudly celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Studio, marking half a century of uninterrupted artistic production.
The jubilee was honored with a retrospective exhibition showcasing the legacy of this workshop and its impact on local and international visual culture.
Through the decades, CSLU–Prilep has proven its ability to maintain high artistic standards, continually selecting exceptional talents from the domestic and global art scenes. The Studio for Wood Sculpture continues to inspire generations of artists while preserving the authentic dialogue between tradition and contemporary expression.
