Borko Lazeski 1917–1993 – A Tribute to Enduring Values
As a proud participant in the retrospective exhibition “Borko Lazeski 1917–1993”, held at the National Gallery of Macedonia in Skopje, CSLU-Prilep contributed one of its most valuable works: “Partizanka” by the acclaimed Macedonian painter Borko Lazeski. The exhibition was a tribute to the enduring power of art and an appeal to preserve true cultural values.
Organized by the National Gallery of Macedonia, the retrospective exhibition “Borko Lazeski 1917–1993” took place from February 15 to April 5 at Daut Pasha Hammam in Skopje, marking the centenary of the birth of one of Macedonia’s most celebrated artists. Featuring over sixty works from nearly all creative periods of Lazeski’s prolific career, the exhibition was one of the key commemorative events honoring his life and artistic legacy.
CSLU-Prilep was honored to contribute the painting “Partizanka”, part of its permanent collection, showcasing the artist’s profound ability to merge social commentary with expressive form. As a cultural institution rooted in the artist’s hometown of Prilep, our participation carried deep symbolic value, reaffirming our commitment to safeguarding Macedonian visual heritage.
Lazeski’s artistic journey spanned decades and continents—from his early woodcuts and war-time sketches to Parisian and
Baghdadi explorations of muralism, culminating in a visual language that resonates with timeless clarity. The exhibition included works from major national institutions and private collections, including the National Assembly, Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts, Museum of Contemporary Art – Skopje, Museum of the City of Skopje, and CSLU-Prilep, among others.
This initiative, paired with the publication of a monographic edition and an upcoming final commemorative event, emphasized Lazeski’s enduring contribution to Macedonian and international art. It also served as a collective reminder of the power of culture to preserve identity, memory, and shared values across generations.
